Selective and Elective rotations are offered as opportunity toward resident individualized educational experiences. Residents may not repeat selective and elective rotations in the same subspecialty between PGY-2 and PGY-3.

Available Selective rotations include Allergy, Ambulatory, Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Geriatrics, Interventional Radiology, Pain Management, Pulmonary/Sleep Medicine Clinic, Radiology, Urgent Care-Clarkston, and Women’s Health/Gyn Office. Residents may request Program Director approval to deviate from the listed options given the rotation remains within the McLaren Health System.

Elective rotations must be approved by Program Administration and may take place outside of the McLaren Health System. Residents may request the following subspecialty elective rotations: Ambulatory, Cardiology, Emergency Medicine, Endocrine, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Intensive Care Unit, Nephrology, Neurology, Pain Management, Pulmonary Medicine (Inpatient), and Rheumatology. Residents may request Program Director approval to deviate from the listed options. Out-of-state electives may be requested.

Resident rotations are scheduled on a month-to-month basis. Typical work hours are 7AM-5PM, however this varies by rotation.

Our hospital runs three separate Internal Medicine services wherein attendings practice the same evidence-based medicine but offer diverse teaching methods. Each service has one senior resident (PGY-2 or -3) and one first year resident per month at minimum, with total number of residents on each service varying monthly. Residents are required to work weekends while on an Internal Medicine rotation and are scheduled to ensure the appropriate amount of time off is being honored per ACGME requirements.

Residents are scheduled for in-house overnight ICU call year-round with an average of 3-4 nights per month (varies by PGY level). This excludes months where residents are scheduled for ICU rotation. PGY-1 residents have a senior IM resident working with them overnight and a Pulmonary/Critical Care Fellow available.

Every week Residents will spend one half day at the continuity clinic at Baybrooke Internal Medicine. During your time in residency, you will be considered one of our junior partners in the clinic. You will have the opportunity to build your own patient panel and provide high value and high-quality care. Here you will learn to manage chronic diseases, provide preventative care, and deal with acute outpatient conditions. You will also be able to hone in on your ultrasounds skills with a Butterfly IQ, and perform procedures such as joint injections, joint aspirations, cerumen removal/irrigation, skin biopsies, etc.

In clinic, residents provide care to patients from Pontiac and the surrounding areas under the supervision of Clinic Director, Dr. Robert Davis, alongside part-time faculty member Dr. Lyndsi Davenport.

Dr. Davis graduated from St. George’s University of London in 2017 where he completed years three and four at Sheba Medical Center in Ramat Gan, Israel, ranked 10th best hospital in the world. Dr. Davis completed residency at Wellspan York Hospital in Pennsylvania in 2020. Following his training, Dr. Davis practiced as a Hospitalist at Henry Ford Hospital with particular interest in Advanced Heart Failure, Structural Heart Disease, Heart Transplant, and Lung Transplant. Dr. Davis joined McLaren Oakland as Clinic Director in August 2022 and completed an Academic Fellowship at Michigan State University in April 2023.

Dr. Davenport graduated from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2013 and completed residency training at Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc, MI, graduating in 2016. Dr. Davenport specializes in preventive medicine and chronic disease management and completed an Academic Fellowship at Michigan State University in October 2021.

Residents are exposed to a variety of ambulatory settings throughout the duration of their training starting in the first year of residency.

To support residents in their long-term career goals, seniors are offered the opportunity to participate in an additional weekly clinic half-day that aligns with their post-graduate interest. This opportunity begins six-months into PGY-2 and ends six-months into PGY-3, and is not mandatory. This timeline allows residents to solidify their post-graduate interests before begging the second clinic as well as time to focus on board study once concluding.

Didactics occur weekly on Tuesday afternoons. This is protected educational time away from service for our residents. Lectures are coordinated by our Academic Chief, delivered by internist and subspecialist faculty, and based on topics chosen directly from the ABIM blueprint.

American Medical Association GME Competency Program: Web-based modules on a variety of topics including (but not limited to) interprofessional teaming, quality improvement practices, patient safety, wellness, cultural competency, and more. Assigned to all McLaren Oakland PGY-1 residents.

John’s Hopkins Physician Education & Assessment Center (PEAC): Web-based modules assigned to residents as supplement to ambulatory curriculum materials covered in lecture

Lifestyle Medicine Curriculum: Residents will begin the Lifestyle Medicine curriculum six months into the program. Lifestyle Medicine uses therapeutic lifestyle interventions to treat chronic conditions. Throughout your training, residents will learn evidence-based approaches to lifestyle changes and interventions. The course is comprised of didactics (individual modules and group sessions), individual application activities, practicum experience, group facilitation and intensive therapeutic lifestyle change. This curriculum is easily integrated into training. At the end of this curriculum, residents will be eligible to sit for your American College of Lifestyle Medicine Board exams.

New England Journal of Medicine – Knowledge Plus: Residents are asked to complete monthly pre- and post-rotation quizzes based on rotation. These reoccurring assignments help residents in self-reflection and learning plan development by identifying progress over time and continued areas for improvement.

Residents are provided a free board review session in June of PGY3 through MSU SCS. As of the 2022-2023 academic year, residents are sent to Awesome Board Review.
